The Football Association has charged Everton Under-21 forward Martin Sherif with 61 alleged breaches of its betting rules, placing the 20-year-old's immediate playing future in doubt. The charges cover wagers placed between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026, a 15-month window that spans his loan spells at Rotherham United and Port Vale.
Sherif is accused of violating FA Rule E1.2, which imposes a worldwide ban on betting on any football match or competition for all participants connected to professional clubs in England. The rule also prohibits passing inside information to third parties for gambling purposes or instructing others to place bets on a participant's behalf. The FA statement does not identify the betting operator used, nor does it suggest any investigation into match-fixing.
Born in Liberia and raised in the Netherlands, Sherif joined Everton's academy at age 13 in 2019. He has yet to make a competitive senior appearance for the first team, though he was an unused substitute in the final Premier League match of the 2024-25 season at Newcastle. His development path included 29 senior appearances and four goals across two League One loans last season: 10 games and two goals for Rotherham United before a hamstring injury prompted a December recall, followed by 17 appearances and two goals for Port Vale, who suffered relegation.
