On the earnings call, Carreiro framed the company's core issue as commercial execution rather than technology differentiation. He outlined a restructuring that concentrates dedicated sales resources on retail and consumer packaged goods — verticals where Digimarc's watermarking portfolio has the strongest differentiation.
The Secure Gift Card solution, deployed chainwide at Schnucks across 115 stores, anchors the retail push. Carreiro said the retail pipeline has grown more than 30 times since the start of the year, from one retailer to more than 31 large and mid-sized accounts in stages from initial discussions to production rollouts. Two additional retailers have committed to deployments: one beginning later in August, another in October.
To sharpen execution, Digimarc appointed Ron Thomas as Chief Revenue Officer effective August 3. Thomas, who previously scaled data.ai from $100 million to over $150 million in ARR, will oversee sales, customer success, revenue operations, and partnerships. A VP of Retail Solutions was also added to the leadership team.
Shares traded down $0.42 to $7.04 on the day of the earnings release, with volume of 207,648 shares against a 223,841 average. The stock carries a market capitalization of approximately $157.8 million.
Needham's reiteration signals confidence that the new leadership structure can convert pipeline momentum into recurring revenue, but the ARR trajectory remains the critical proof point. Can the Secure Gift Card rollouts and retail pipeline conversion offset the contract losses quickly enough to stabilize ARR in the coming quarters?
