UK tax authorities will treat certain crypto lending and liquidity pool transactions as “no gain, no loss” starting in April 2027, deferring Capital Gains Tax until users make an economic disposal. The policy, announced by HMRC, applies to defined cryptoasset loans and liquidity pool deposits and is expected to affect about 700,000 individuals, simplifying tax reporting for DeFi participants.

Under existing rules, each transfer of cryptoassets into or out of a liquidity pool could trigger a taxable event, creating significant administrative complexity for users. The new deferral removes that immediate charge, postponing the tax liability until the user sells, transfers, or otherwise economically disposes of the asset in a way that realises value. The precise definition of an “economic disposal” will determine the final timing of tax payments, a point that tax advisers and DeFi platforms are watching closely.

The measure aligns the tax treatment of crypto lending more closely with traditional finance, where collateral transfers are often tax-neutral until a final sale. This shift is intended to reduce the reporting burden on individuals and to provide a clearer framework for the growing decentralised finance sector in the UK. Legislation to implement the change is expected to be laid before Parliament, and the April 2027 start date gives both HMRC and market participants time to adapt compliance systems.
