Excerpts from the article

  • Etched, a startup developing specialized processors for artificial intelligence, is reportedly targeting a $20 billion valuation in an upcoming…
  • The Cupertino- and San Jose-based firm is betting that the future of AI inference belongs not to general-purpose graphics processors, but to silicon…
  • Etched was founded in 2022 by Harvard dropouts Gavin Uberti and Chris Zhu. The pair set out to solve what they saw as a fundamental inefficiency in…

The market has been receptive. Etched has already booked roughly $1 billion in customer orders, and its previous funding round — a roughly $500 million Series C led by Stripes LLC in July 2025 — valued the company at $5 billion post-money. That round brought total equity raised to nearly $1 billion, with backers including Peter Thiel, Jane Street, and TSMC's venture arm.

Quadrupling Down on Specialized Silicon

The reported $20 billion target would represent a fourfold increase from that July 2025 valuation, an aggressive re-rating that implies investors are pricing in both explosive revenue growth and the possibility that Etched can carve out a durable niche against Nvidia's dominant data-center GPU franchise.

No details have emerged about the exact size of the new raise or the identity of potential lead investors. However, the mere attempt to raise at such a premium signals that at least some heavyweight backers believe the inference market is moving toward custom ASICs, and that Etched's transformer-locked architecture is one of the most credible bets.

The startup's focus on a single model class is simultaneously its greatest strength and its most acute vulnerability. If the AI industry continues to converge on transformer variants, Sohu could enjoy a cost-performance moat that general-purpose chips struggle to match. If, however, the next breakthrough model departs significantly from the transformer blueprint, the chip's rigid design could become obsolete quickly.
