The August surge stands in sharp contrast to July, when Bitcoin ETFs managed just $172.4 million for the entire month after combined outflows of more than $8 billion in May and June. The Fear and Greed Index remained at 25 — deep in extreme fear territory — even as the inflows accelerated, a disconnect that suggests some demand may be tactical or hedge-related rather than purely directional.
Bitcoin traded near $65,241 with 24-hour volume of $14.3 billion and a market capitalization of $1.31 trillion as of August 10. Total spot Bitcoin ETF net assets reached approximately $79.5 billion, equal to about 6.1% of Bitcoin's market cap, with cumulative net inflows since launch of $52.18 billion and daily trading value of $1.57 billion.
The inflow streak also coincided with the liquidation of Hashdex's DEFI ETF, the first U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF to close, which will sell roughly 225 BTC after August 17. Whether the current momentum reflects durable institutional allocation or shorter-term positioning remains the key question as the category tests its ability to retain capital through a prolonged price range.
