Liquidity conditions are tightening at the margin. The PBOC conducted zero seven-day reverse repo operations on August 12, creating a 5 billion yuan net drain as maturing repos went unrenewed. Interbank rates and government bond yields face upward pressure if the stance persists.
What to Watch
The central tension is whether policy can revive private credit demand without simply filling state-directed channels. With Q2 real GDP at 4.3% year-on-year — the slowest since late 2022 — and nominal GDP at 5.9%, the next checkpoints are the official July credit data, the September LPR decision, and third-quarter GDP. If growth slips further below 5%, the probability of an RRR cut or targeted credit acceleration rises. The question now is whether the July contraction proves a seasonal blip or a signal that the transmission mechanism from ample liquidity to real borrowing remains blocked?
