That rapid repricing reflects a market struggling to interpret mixed signals. June CPI inflation cooled to 3.5% year-over-year, down from May’s 4.2% print, which would normally weaken the case for tightening. But Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has repeatedly said inflation remains “too high,” and some committee members have argued policy is not yet restrictive enough. The result is a meeting where the statement and press conference may carry more weight than the rate decision itself.

The macro anxiety was compounded by a sharp selloff in U.S. Treasuries, which pushed yields higher and increased the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding digital assets. A strengthening U.S. dollar added further pressure. Institutional flows through spot Ethereum ETFs turned negative, shifting from consistent accumulation to net outflows, while on-chain metrics showed a deceleration in Layer-2 activity and a slight uptick in exchange inflows from long-term holders.

Derivatives markets also reflected the strain. Ethereum long liquidations reached $76.9 million over 24 hours, compared with $21.9 million in short liquidations, according to Coinglass data. The OI-weighted funding rate for Ethereum moved below zero, suggesting leveraged positioning has tilted slightly toward shorts after remaining positive through much of July.
