The move in oil also carries a technical dimension. WTI sliced through an ascending trend line that had guided its climb from the $68 area to the $93.83 swing high, finding support near $83.10. The 38.2% Fibonacci retracement sits at $87.20, with the 50% level at $88.46 and the 61.8% level at $89.73, a zone that now forms a potential resistance cluster. A hold below $85 keeps the relief trade intact; a move back above $90 would restore much of the inflation and supply-risk pressure the market has just tried to price out.
The broader backdrop adds complexity. The Federal Reserve’s policy decision is due Wednesday, and a heavy slate of Big Tech earnings is scheduled throughout the week. Last week, the S&P 500 fell 1.55% and the Nasdaq dropped 2.90% as surging energy prices revived inflation fears and pushed the two-year Treasury yield to its highest since February 2025. The oil retreat eases some of that pressure, but US gasoline still held at $4.11 a gallon, up 30.5% from a year earlier, so relief has yet to reach the consumer.
