Rivian Automotive carries a market capitalization of roughly $23 billion even as its core vehicle business still loses money on every car it builds. The company began delivering its first mass-market SUV, the R2, on June 9, 2026, marking the start of a product cycle that management says will eventually cut production costs roughly in half compared with the flagship R1 lineup.

Second-quarter results showed revenue of $1.658 billion, up 27% year over year, and a record consolidated gross profit of $179 million at an 11% margin. But the segment breakdown tells a different story: automotive gross profit was a $36 million loss, while software and services generated $215 million of gross profit at a 42% margin. Of that software revenue, $308 million — 60% — came from the Volkswagen Group joint venture. In other words, the only consistently profitable part of Rivian today is a contract engineering business selling electrical architecture to another automaker.

The R2 is supposed to change that math. Rivian expects the new platform to achieve positive vehicle gross margin in the second half of 2026, and the company has raised full-year delivery guidance to 65,000–70,000 units. Early demand signals are strong: over 200,000 reservations and 57,000 demo drives in the quarter, a company record. A second production shift at the Normal, Illinois plant is planned by the end of the third quarter to keep pace.
