Nancy Beaton, President of Uphold U.S., described the experience bluntly: “People want one app for all of their investing – crypto included. Uphold customers can now sell Bitcoin to buy Berkshire Hathaway shares in a single step on the app – with no clunky currency conversions and without needing to transfer funds between stablecoins or cash balances.”
Fractional Shares Lower the Entry Barrier
The launch includes fractional share trading, meaning investors can buy a slice of a high-priced stock with as little as $5, subject to account approval and minimum-order requirements. That opens access to names like Apple, Tesla, and SpaceX without needing to commit hundreds or thousands of dollars per share.
Uphold first introduced fractional U.S. equities around 2020, but the current expansion scales the offering to over 4,000 securities and integrates it tightly with the crypto trading experience. The fractional component is especially relevant for smaller accounts that want exposure to expensive stocks or ETFs that hold private-market darlings like SpaceX.
Regulatory Backbone: The JNK Securities Acquisition
Offering securities is not a simple feature toggle for a crypto platform. Uphold’s ability to do so rests on its 2021 acquisition of JNK Securities, a U.S. broker-dealer. That deal came with FINRA approval, giving Uphold the regulatory clearance to operate a compliant securities trading business. Not every crypto-native competitor holds that license, which creates a meaningful barrier to imitation.
