The Strait of Hormuz—a waterway that normally handles one-fifth of global oil trade—has become the focal point of a rapidly escalating military confrontation between the United States and Iran. After eight consecutive nights of U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets, President Donald Trump has vowed to hit Iran “extremely hard,” setting a Monday deadline for a deal before threatening to target bridges and power plants. The immediate trigger: Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks that killed two U.S. service members at a Jordanian air base on July 17, with a third American dying a day later in Iraq.

The human toll is mounting. U.S. Central Command confirmed that two service members were killed and one went missing after the July 17 attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. A separate fatality occurred in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone. The deaths pushed the U.S. military death toll in the conflict to at least 16, with more than 430 wounded since the war began. In response, CENTCOM launched retaliatory strikes designed to “swiftly punish” Iranian forces and degrade their ability to threaten commercial shipping.
