Soaring tanker rates are adding as much as $40 per barrel to the delivered cost of crude, according to a Forbes report published October 18, 2026, reshaping global trade flows and lifting fuel costs for consumers. The surge reflects a fundamental shift: the price of oil is no longer just the price of crude, but increasingly the price of moving it.

On the West Africa to China route, Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) freight jumped from roughly $6.50 a barrel in July to $20.41 last week and $23.59 by Saturday, a 258% increase in two months, according to data from European analyst Karel Mercx and The Kobeissi Letter cited by Moneyvests. The Gulf of Oman to China route hit a record $11.50 a barrel, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, the Houston-to-Asia run now costs about $26 a barrel — $52 million per two-million-barrel cargo — equivalent to roughly 25% of West Texas Intermediate futures, per GetSupplyBrief and Bloomberg.

Daily charter rates for VLCCs on the benchmark Persian Gulf to China route have crossed $1 million for the first time, Baltic Exchange data show, up from a pre-conflict range of $117,400 to $208,000. BDTI figures from mid-September put the TD3C (Middle East–Far East) time-charter equivalent at $1.2125 million a day, TD15 (West Africa–Far East) at $524,500, and TD22 (US Gulf–Far East) at $388,400. The world's largest oil-tanker equities reached a record valuation near $70 billion.
